Putl’iixw School Garden Farm Worker Job Description: A Canada Summer Jobs Position

We are seeking two motivated individuals for a 30-hour per week Canada Summer Jobs position as Putl’iixw School Garden Farm Workers

  • 30 hours a week

  • $25.oo per hour

  • Starts May 15th – August 15th, 2025

Responsibilities:

Work with Students at Acwsalcta School operating the Putl’iixw School Garden program to plan, develop and maintain the garden.

  • Seed starting, planting, watering, weeding, harvesting produce.

  • Maintaining tools, fencing and other structures on the garden site

  • Cutting grass and weed whacking, seaweed harvesting and soil building

  • Research and plant traditional Nuxalk food forest plants, like huckleberry, blueberry...

  • Supporting community Gardening Events (planting days, weeding days, knowledge sharing events)

  • Running some child and youth programming during the school months, including traditional food gathering with local cultural staff.

Help coordinate the Bella Coola Farmers' market Sundays at Lobelco / Snuqaax

  • Assist with set-up, takedown, vendor relations, event and volunteer coordination

  • Sell some produce from the garden at the Farmers' Market

Support local gleaning projects

  • Help Elders pick fruit trees on their properties.

  • Visit enrolled trees around the valley to assess fruit ripeness.

  • Pick fruit from enrolled trees to share the harvest (cherries, apples, berries).

  • Help appropriately store and distribute donated fruit to community organizations, elders and schools. 

  • Install and maintain electric fencing to increase fruit available to the community

Staff may also help with other food security programs or events, including setting up gardens for elders and community members, fruit picking, and community distribution of produce. 

Requirements

We're looking for someone who has:

  • Desire to learn about food security, gardening and event coordination

  • Reliable work ethic, Flexible schedule

  • Good fitness level - able to lift up to 30kg

  • Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Persons Check

Additional assets

  • Reliable access to a vehicle capable of transporting up to 16' ladders

  • Record-keeping skills

  • Communication skills

Working Environment

The Putl’iixw School Garden Farm Worker will be employed by the Bella Coola Foodshed Alliance, an organization that promotes local food production and supports food security programs within the valley. Acwsalcta students have played a primary role in managing the school garden over the years, with the participation of students from Kindergarten to Grade 11 in weekly workshops.

The Bella Foodshed Alliance cultivates a self-reliant, healthy local food system to feed generations of valley residents healthy, nourishing, affordable foods in the valley since 2004. Our programs aim to build community connections through programs & events, expand local production capacity via gardens & gleaning projects, enhancing food access with storage, distribution, and diverse sources. Our initiatives include the farmers market, fruit gleaning program, community workshops, seed library and event such as seedy Saturday, annual plant swap and Zucchini Race at the Fall Fair. We support the schools, food bank and local elders with food security programming.

The Putl'iixw/Acwsalcta Student Positon would be supervised by Ted Campbell.  The supervisor will provide Acwsalcta School with on-going updates on the progress of the student progress. The position would also collaborate closely with the Bella Coola Foodshed Alliance's Food Security Coordinator (Liz Howard) and Gleaning Coordinator (Riley Millar).
