We're Hiring a Food Security Coordinator

Location: Bella Coola Valley, BC

Hours: 15 hrs/week
Pay: $ 30 CAD/hour

The Role
We are seeking a motivated, community-rooted person to implement food security initiatives across the valley. The Food Security Coordinator supports the core Bella Coola Foodshed Alliance programs that increase access to local, nutritious food and build long-term community resilience. This is a key role with flexible hours and room to shape the work within the VCH-funded Community Food Action Initiative. It is carried out under the guidance of the society's volunteer board members, who are active, responsive, and regularly pitch in at events and programs.
Key Responsibilities
Manage the Bella Coola Farmers’ Market (June–October), Including bookkeeping, promotion, customer relations, vendor recruitment and retention, volunteer management, administering the Farmers’ Market Nutrition Coupon Program.
Deliver Cooking Together for children and youth workshops (Jan–March, two 4-week sessions), Including: menu planning and budgeting, organizing venue, organizing peer leaders and/or guest chefs recruitment and criminal check compliance.
Coordinate seasonal events: plant swap, seed sharing, zucchini race, special events such as movie nights, workshops. (March-June, September-January) including volunteer coordination.
Manage the seed library, promote seed saving.
Provide admin support, including outreach, membership tracking, program planning, fundraising, budgeting and reporting inline with VCH requirements.
Partnership-building within the community- with schools, non-profits, food producers, as well as outside the community, such as health authorities, and partner organizations such as the BC Farmer's Market Association.
Work closely with the BCFA board and seasonal staff.
What We’re Looking For
Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
Self-directed, reliable, and comfortable working independently
Familiarity with the valley and its communities
Able to work some evenings/weekends (including to attend monthly board meetings)
Access to computer, internet, and transportation - basic comfort with email, spreadsheets, shared documents, and social media (facebook).
Understanding of food security, community development, or social determinants of health. Experience in this area preferred.
Experience in program planning and delivery, event coordination, fundraising, or working across cultures.
Commitment to decolonizing practices and inclusive food systems.
Additional assets: experience with grant writing and administration
Additional requirements: criminal check to work with children and youth.
